The inevitable has finally happened: Bynder is switching Webdam off.

Back in 2018, after VC-backed Series A funding, digital asset management (DAM) behemoth Bynder acquired Webdam. Since then, it’s been a slow and steady winding down of the platform. That’s meant fewer updates, less visibility, and customers left wondering what the future holds for their DAM system.

Now it’s official. From what we've heard from customers looking to move, it would appear that in September 2026 the plug will be pulled on Webdam and all users will be forced to migrate to Bynder. Although this has yet to be confirmed officially, as Bynder haven't yet announced anything publicly.

If you’ve been using Webdam for years, you’re faced with a decision. Do you let Bynder decide for you, or use this as an opportunity to reassess what you actually need from a DAM?

What is Webdam?

Webdam is a digital asset management (DAM) platform used by marketing and creative teams. It offers users fairly standard DAM features, acting as a central library for images, videos, documents and other brand assets.

However, users report some setbacks from using the Bynder-acquired DAM tool. From an analysis of their reviews, users repeatedly cite the platform being slow and sluggish, the UX being hard to use, and the costs being prohibitive. They also underline the lack of a real product roadmap after Bynder’s acquisition.

It’s no wonder Bynder is turning it off. But that shouldn’t mean you exchange one DAM system that doesn’t best fit your needs for another.

What's happening to Webdam?

Webdam has been part of Bynder. It’s now being fully retired as a product from September 2026.

If you’re an existing Webdam customer, that means:

  • You’ll need to migrate your assets to a new platform
  • There’s a hard deadline of September 2026 to make the switch
  • Your current setup won’t be supported long-term
  • You’ll need to start planning for migration, and the sooner the better
  • If you don’t, you’ll be migrated to Bynder by default in September 2026 - where costs and system complexity can quickly ramp up.

For teams managing large creative libraries with multiple terabytes of storage, this isn’t a small task. It’s a full-scale migration project.

What’s the pros and cons of being moved to Bynder?

As you’d expect, Bynder is positioning themselves as the natural next step for Webdam customers. And in some cases, this will be correct. It’s a strong platform, with good review scores, and it’s clearly built for scale.

But here’s something to note. It’s categorically not a continuation of Webdam. It’s a different system, with different trade-offs and different learning curves.

The pros and cons of moving to Bynder

So to help you figure out if you should let Bynder migrate you over by default, we’ll go through the pros and cons.

The upside of being made to move to Bynder

1. It’s a modern, actively developed platform

Unlike Webdam, Bynder is still evolving and has a clear product roadmap. That means you’ll get all the benefits of a product that’s being actively invested in, like regular product updates and ongoing work on new features and integrations.

If you’ve been frustrated with Webdam’s stagnation and lack of a roadmap, this could be a good fit for you. Although it’s worth noting feature development and clear roadmaps are industry-standard for DAM systems, and there’s plenty of other tools on the market that can offer the same.

2. Bynder is strong for large, structured teams

Bynder is built with enterprise use cases in mind. If you opt to move over to Bynder, you’ll benefit from:

  • Advanced permissions and user roles
  • Brand governance and consistency tools
  • Workflow support across teams and global regions

So if you’re an enterprise company managing multiple teams, markets, or approval layers, this can be a good fit. This is something Bynder is particularly good at.

3. You won’t have to worry about finding alternatives

If your team is stretched and stressed out by their workloads, then it could be a real relief not having to worry about a DAM migration project either.

And that shouldn’t be discounted. If you don’t have the headspace to research Bynder alternatives and manage a migration, then it’s a viable option to let yourself be migrated across.

So for busy teams, moving to Bynder will probably feel like the safe option.

(Some DAMs are quick to onboard and offer free migration support, like Dash. Providing you pick a tool like Dash, moving away from Webdam and Bynder doesn’t always mean you’ll have loads of work on your hands.)

The downsides of moving to Bynder

1. Costs can escalate quickly

Bynder is an enterprise DAM tool, and their pricing structure matches that. They frustratingly keep information about their pricing off their website, but costs can start anywhere from $500 to $6,000 a month (according to Vendr). And that means:

  • Features that feel essential aren’t always included by default
  • Add-ons (like advanced functionality or integrations) can increase costs
  • Total spend can end up significantly higher than expected

Don’t be caught out by an attractive starting price. You should make sure you’re very clear about pricing once everything’s included.

2. More complexity than many teams actually need

Bynder is designed for complex organisations. That often means:

  • More complicated setup and configuration is required
  • There’s far more features than some teams will realistically use
  • It can lead overall to a system that feels heavy, bloated, and difficult to navigate

Many large enterprise teams describe it as powerful, but it’s not always suitable for faster, more agile marketing and creative teams.

3. A steep learning curve during an already disruptive time

Even though it’s positioned as a natural transition, Bynder isn’t Webdam. As with moving to any new system, you’ll have to learn its interface, workflows, and how to best restructure your content library.

Your team will need to relearn parts of the system, which adds friction during migration. And according to G2 reviews, Bynder isn’t that intuitive to learn due to its many features. One reviewer said:
“There is definitely a learning curve. What you don't know or don't think of prior to launch may be difficult to figure out after launch.”

4. You’ll miss out on more affordable, easier-to-use alternatives

Bynder isn’t the only DAM in the market. If you care about ease of use, affordability, and quality UX, Bynder might not be the best DAM platform for you.

Even if you decide to go with Bynder, take some time to research Bynder alternatives. Dash, for example, is made for high-performing marketing and creative teams and comes at a fraction of the cost.

The honest take

Bynder is a capable, well-supported platform. For large organisations with complex needs, it can absolutely be the right choice. But it’s not automatically the right choice.

Especially if:

  • You don’t need enterprise-level complexity
  • You want predictable, transparent DAM pricing
  • You value speed and simplicity in day-to-day use

You might be being moved to Bynder, but you’re not obligated to choose it. And if you’re already being made to migrate to a new DAM, why don’t you see what else is out there?

What to look for in a Webdam alternative

So if you’re evaluating alternatives for Webdam and Bynder, here’s what to look out for:

Transparent pricing

You should know exactly what you’re paying for, without needing to unlock core functionality later. That’s especially so if you’re being made to migrate to a system that you’ll end up paying more for.

All the features you actually need

Search, integrations, API access, version control, more users: these shouldn’t be treated as premium extras only available for companies with big budgets. If this is important to you, look for an alternative where you can get access to all features and unlimited users from day one (like Dash).

A system that simplifies, not complicates

Navigating a maze of features you don’t want makes it harder to find and use the features you do!

The right DAM should make it easier for your team to find, use, and share assets. It shouldn’t add layers of complexity.

Support during migration

Moving thousands (or hundreds of thousands) of assets and their organisation structure is no small job.

Look for a platform with a team that helps you clean, organise, and structure your library as you move. Some DAMs, like Dash, offer this as a free service.

Why teams are choosing Dash instead of Webdam

Use this forced migration as an opportunity to take stock. Why not use this as an opportunity to find a tool that better suits you and your team?

This is where a lot of Webdam teams are ending up: using this moment to switch to something simpler, more affordable, more transparent, and easier to manage.

Enter stage left: Dash. It’s the modern, affordable, flexible DAM made for ambitious marketing and creative teams.

Here’s how it compares to Bynder and Webdam:

1. Everything included, from day one

With Dash, every feature is available on every plan.

That includes:

  • Unlimited users
  • AI-powered search
  • Integrations with core tools like Shopify, Adobe and Canva
  • API access (so your development team can integrate it into your marketing tech stack)
  • Version control
  • Portals so your retailers can get product shots without having to bother you.

No add-ons. Just pay for the storage and usage you need.

2. Affordable, transparent pricing

Dash pricing is based on storage and downloads. It doesn’t lock extra seats or features behind increasingly-expensive price tags. Plans start from just $109 / £79 a month.

Unlike other DAMs, we don’t lock you into long contracts either. Decide Dash isn’t for you? All you need to do is give us 30 days’ notice.

3. Built for ambitious ecommerce brands

Dash is the only DAM built specifically for ecommerce. That’s why we integrate directly into Shopify, so you can push product creative live to your PDPs painlessly and effortlessly. That’s just one of the ways Dash takes the pain out of ecommerce creative workflows.

4. Fast, supported onboarding

Dash supports onboarding in a matter of weeks—not months. We won’t leave you to figure out your Webdam move alone.

You’ll get:

  • A dedicated team member guiding you through
  • Technical support you might need to move assets from Webdam to Dash
  • Structured onboarding sessions with our expert team
  • Clear migration timelines

You’ll be up and running in no time!

Next steps: compare your Webdam options properly
